Clean water
Potting soil (optional, if planting in soil later)
String or wire for hanging
Optional: small pebbles or charcoal for drainage
Step-by-Step: How to Grow Basil from Cuttings in Hanging Bottles
🌿 Step 1: Take Your Cutting
Snip a healthy 4–6 inch basil stem just below a leaf node (where leaves meet the stem). Remove the lower leaves, leaving a few at the top.
🌊 Step 2: Root It in Water
Place the cutting in a glass of water. Keep it in a warm, sunny spot indoors.
Within 7–10 days, you’ll see roots starting to form.
Tip: Change the water every 2–3 days to keep it fresh and oxygenated.
🧴 Step 3: Prepare the Bottle Planter
Take your plastic bottle and cut a large window or flap in the side, leaving enough space for planting. Poke a few drainage holes in the bottom if using soil.
Alternatively, cut the top off and invert it into the base to create a self-watering planter.
Bonus Tip: Add string or wire to create a hanger — or punch holes near the top and use twine to suspend your bottle.
🪴 Step 4: Transplant the Cutting
Once the roots are about 2 inches long, gently plant the cutting in your bottle filled with potting mix (or hydroponic solution if going soil-free).
Press soil lightly around the roots and water gently.
Want to keep it in water? You can! Just anchor the plant using pebbles and keep the water level just under the leaves.
