🍰 Classic Vanilla Butter Cake with Buttermilk Sauce
A timeless dessert with a southern twist
When it comes to comfort baking, few things compare to the elegance and simplicity of a well-made butter cake. Add a rich, tangy buttermilk sauce that soaks into every crumb, and you’ve got yourself a dessert that feels like a hug on a plate.
This Classic Vanilla Butter Cake with Buttermilk Sauce is the kind of treat that brings people to the table — no frosting needed, no fancy fillings, just pure, buttery goodness with a velvety pour-over sauce that makes every bite unforgettable.
🧁 What Makes It Special?
Unlike more decorated cakes, this one shines through its ingredients. Real butter, pure vanilla, and a splash of buttermilk give the cake a fine crumb and deep flavor. But what really sets it apart is the warm buttermilk sauce — poured over the cake just after baking, it seeps in slightly and creates a moist, tender texture with a sweet, almost caramelized tang.
✨ Ingredients
For the Cake:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
4 large eggs
1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
For the Buttermilk Sauce:
1/2 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of baking soda
🥣 Instructions
Make the Cake:
Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan or two 8-inch round cake pans.
Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy (about 3–5 minutes).
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Stir in vanilla.
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour. Do not overmix.
Pour batter into the prepared pan(s), smoothing the top.
Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean and the top is golden.
Make the Buttermilk Sauce:
While the cake is baking, combine butter, sugar, buttermilk, and baking soda in a saucepan.
Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Let it bubble gently for 1–2 minutes until slightly thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla.
🍯 To Serve:
While the cake is still warm, poke small holes all over the top with a skewer or fork. Slowly pour the buttermilk sauce over the cake, letting it soak in. Serve warm or at room temperature.
This cake gets better as it sits, so feel free to make it a day ahead.
