🇮🇹 What Is Tiramisu?

The word tiramisu means “pick me up” in Italian—a nod to its energizing ingredients like espresso and cocoa. Originating in the Veneto region of Italy, this dessert has evolved into a global favorite, often found on menus in both classic trattorias and modern restaurants.

Traditional tiramisu is known for its:

Light but rich mascarpone cream

Delicately soaked ladyfingers (savoiardi)

Bittersweet espresso and cocoa flavors

Optional hint of coffee liqueur or Marsala wine

🧾 Ingredients You’ll Need

For the mascarpone filling:

6 egg yolks

Âľ cup (150g) granulated sugar

1 cup (240ml) heavy cream

1 pound (450g) mascarpone cheese

For the espresso soak:

1½ cups strong brewed espresso or very strong coffee, cooled

2–3 tablespoons coffee liqueur (like Kahlúa) or Marsala wine (optional)

For assembly:

1 package ladyfinger cookies (about 24–30)

Unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting)

Dark chocolate shavings (optional)

👩‍🍳 How to Make Classic Tiramisu
Step 1: Whip the mascarpone cream

In a heatproof bowl over a double boiler, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until thick and pale (about 8–10 minutes). Let cool.

In a separate bowl, beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

In another bowl, beat mascarpone until smooth.

Gently fold the egg mixture into the mascarpone, then fold in the whipped cream. Be careful not to deflate the mixture.

Step 2: Prepare the espresso soak

Combine brewed espresso with liqueur or Marsala wine (if using). Let cool completely.

Step 3: Assemble the tiramisu

Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture—just 1–2 seconds per side to avoid sogginess.

Arrange a layer of dipped ladyfingers in a 9×13-inch dish.

Spread half of the mascarpone mixture evenly over the ladyfingers.

Repeat with another layer of dipped ladyfingers, followed by the remaining mascarpone cream.

Step 4: Chill and serve

Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, preferably overnight.

Just before serving, dust generously with cocoa powder and sprinkle with chocolate shavings if desired.
