Chicken-Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy: Southern Comfort on a Plate

When it comes to down-home comfort food, nothing hits quite like Chicken-Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. This Southern staple is crispy, tender, creamy, and downright satisfying — a meal that wraps you up like a warm hug after a long day.

Whether you grew up eating it or are trying it for the first time, chicken-fried steak is a dish that speaks to tradition, simplicity, and indulgence. Served with buttery mashed potatoes and rich country gravy, it’s comfort food at its very best.

🥩 What Is Chicken-Fried Steak?
Despite the name, chicken-fried steak doesn’t contain chicken at all. It’s typically made from tenderized cube steak, breaded and fried just like fried chicken — hence the name. The golden, crispy crust gives way to juicy beef inside, and when topped with a generous pour of creamy white gravy, it becomes something truly unforgettable.

🍽 Ingredients
For the Chicken-Fried Steak:

4 beef cube steaks (or tenderized round steak)

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp paprika

1 tsp garlic powder

½ tsp salt

½ tsp black pepper

Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cubed

4 tbsp butter

½ cup milk or cream

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Country Gravy:

2 tbsp pan drippings or butter

2 tbsp flour

1 ½ cups milk

Salt, pepper, and a pinch of paprika or cayenne

👩‍🍳 Instructions
1. Make the Mashed Potatoes:
Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (about 15–20 minutes). Drain, then mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until creamy. Set aside and keep warm.

2. Prepare the Steaks:
Dip cube steaks in buttermilk, then dredge in seasoned flour (flour + paprika + garlic powder + salt + pepper). For extra crunch, repeat for a double coating.

3. Fry the Steaks:
Heat about ½ inch of oil in a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Fry steaks for 3–4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
