I Found These Little Marbles in My Bed and Almost Had a Heart Attack: I’ll Tell You What They Were
We’ve all had those moments where our heart skips a beat — a strange noise in the house, a flicker of movement in the corner of our eye, or, in my case, discovering a handful of mysterious little marbles in my bed.
Yes, marbles. Or at least, that’s what I thought at first.
It was late at night, and I was just about to crawl into bed after a long day. As I pulled back the covers, I felt them — small, hard, round objects rolling around beneath the sheets. My immediate thought? Panic. Had I somehow slept on top of broken beads? Was something in my bed shedding? Was I about to be featured in some bizarre horror story?
My mind raced. Had my niece been playing in the room and spilled toys? Was this some kind of pest I didn’t know about? Were they eggs? I didn’t want to touch them again.
I turned on every light in the room and leaned in. What I found was… oddly anticlimactic and slightly hilarious:
They were tapioca pearls.
Yes. The same kind you find at the bottom of your boba tea.
Let me explain.
Earlier that day, I had been trying a new recipe I found online for homemade bubble tea — a classic milk tea with chewy tapioca pearls made from scratch. I was proud of myself for boiling and sweetening them just right. But somewhere along the line, a few of the pearls must have hitched a ride on my clothes or hands and ended up in the bed. By the time I found them, they had dried out, shrunk slightly, and turned firm — hence their marble-like feel.
Mystery solved. Panic averted.
A Lesson in the Unexpected (and Clean-Up)
While it ended up being nothing serious, this little episode taught me three things:
Always clean up thoroughly after cooking, especially with sticky ingredients.
Change your clothes after cooking if you’re dealing with small or messy foods.
Tapioca pearls, when dried, feel alarmingly like something far more sinister.
If you’re wondering how to avoid a similar scare — or if you just want to try making tapioca pearls at home (and hopefully keep them out of your bed), here’s the recipe I used:
