4 large russet potatoes , peeled and cubed
1/2 cup unsalted butter , melted
1/2 cup whole milk (or cream for extra richness)
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese , plus extra for topping
For the Meat Filling:
1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)
1 medium onion , diced
2 cloves garlic , minced
1 cup frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn)
1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup
1/2 cup beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp dried thyme
Salt and pepper , to taste
For the Topping:
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup crushed crackers or breadcrumbs
2 tbsp melted butter
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Preheat & Prep
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) . Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Step 2: Make the Mashed Potatoes
Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender (about 15–20 minutes). Drain well.
Return the potatoes to the pot and mash with melted butter, milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy. Stir in 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Set aside.
